A Smile For Appearances

Shall we continue the dance in avoidance
At some other juncture? Dinner guests
Have arrived; we both understand
The importance of appearances.
“Yes, the turkey is delicious,”
Though it is drier than Dave’s humor.
“This wine is exquisite. Where did you get it?”
The sale rack at the local corner store.
“You two look so happy together.
I wish to find a love like yours.”
Ah, a smile can tell so much or so little;
Misleading in its purity, its charm.
